About Me

Hi, I am Allen. Every morning I take a shower, eat breakfast, brush my teeth, and do other things one might do to begin their day. Somewhere along the way, I get shampoo in my eye, defy the laws of physics flinging toothpaste into my eye, or casually drop a glob of toothpaste-filled spit onto fresh socks. It’s always one if not all of the above. Whilst the mundane and ordinary may strike you as well, mundane and ordinary, to me, these incidents act as ‘kick-starts’ to the day – where I look in the mirror, nod, and say, “Today’s gonna be a good day.”

I live 3,852 miles and ocean away from home. In twenty-eleven I designed this blog to investigate my experience as an undergraduate international student. At the time, I didn’t understand the potential. Since starting “That Queen Elizabeth is a tough old bird”, the blog has evolved into a platform for sports, sightseeing/travel reviews, gig reviews, a budget cookbook, topical debate/venting, and more. I am currently continuing my studies abroad on a MA Sports Journalism programme at the University of Salford – my hopeful career path.

What to know…

My room travels with me. I replicate familiarity. I insist my room be painted Carolina blue. My room abroad is frankly not. It’s almost that mean Coastal Carolina teal. I am in love with my mirror-door wardrobe for the sole purpose of vanity. I kid; too aggressive. I like organisation and sarcasm. My room is sport fanatical.

I never wear my hat straight and that isn’t on purpose. My head is crooked. I can’t grow a beard. And since my hat doesn’t sit perfectly, I like my glasses to have an eastern tilt to them. Hats don’t naturally suit me. Out of respect, I take it off when greeting someone. I’m horrifically superstitious – in an amusing way – left to right. I am a southpaw, but I throw right-handed.

Guatemerican. I was adopted at six months, so before I even knew it, I was already going Worldwide. Since you’re telling on me, tell the world about me. I appreciate where I’m from, but sometimes I forget to appreciate the journey. Appreciate the journey. I’m one who covets that ¾ inch of his 5-3 ¾ frame. I’m never satisfied. I’m always hungry. I’m self-motivated.

Say you Kingsmill 50/50, I’m whole grain. My music is erratic: one moment Within the Ruins, the next Bun B & Jeezy, Paul Desmond, and bubble-gum pop. I like speeches. Something about E.T. (Eric Thomas), Muhammad Ali, Les Brown, and Al Pacino gets me hype #4LYF. The construction of sentences, whether to inspire/motivate or as lyrics showcasing how many triple-black Phantoms Rick Ross has, I’m intrigued. I dissect them – I write my own (horribly). I like one-liners, name-dropping, using a word as its antonym, and slant pop culture references. I like the potential of 140 characters. I RT @JayBilas. I love gym shorts.
